THAT’S A WRAP. Finished my last run (3 miles) this morning and I am almost ready to jump on a plane tomorrow! I have a few things left to pick up but my packing is pretty much done. Nothing more I can do at this point except put my positive pants on and have a great time. I never really feel “ready” before a race because I always think I could have done x and y differently. Every training cycle is a learning experience though and I’m looking forward to seeing how my body performs this weekend.
Total miles over the last 24 weeks: 827.69 [1332 kms]
Total injuries over the last 24 weeks: 0
Total number of pizzas eaten over the last 24 weeks: a lot
As much as I’ve enjoyed the challenge of training for Golden Ultra, I am really looking forward to varying my workouts again soon. I always say this at the end of a cycle and then after a few weeks, I crave the structure of a training program again. Hah! We’ll see how it goes this time around. I love love love running but there have been weeks where I’ve just been soooo tired. I’m excited that this weekend is finally here.
Now let’s talk a bit about the Mode Media mess that went down last week. If you’re a fellow blogger, you’ve probably already heard. If you haven’t, I’ll give you a quick rundown. Last Thursday, Mode Media (the publishing company I was signed with) closed its doors. If you recall, I had some ads above my header and on my sidebar that were from Mode which brought in a tiny bit of monthly revenue (now only the Google ones are left). I have also done a couple of campaigns with them over the last few months. Well, back in the summer I sent them an email as I had not been paid for a campaign I did in March. I was originally told that payout would be in July so when that didn’t come, I followed up and received an email back saying that payments were delayed. Fine. I took on another campaign and just hoped that payments would get back on track soon. After some back and forth at the beginning of this month, I was told that payments would start coming in again at the end of September. Everything would be back on schedule and I’d get all of my missing money. Unfortunately this is no longer the case as Mode Media has closed with no warning and left a whole bunch of bloggers in the dust. I tried sending emails to my contact there and I also tried calling the Toronto office but as expected, I got no response.
I’m frustrated but after reading what a lot of bloggers have said about money that they are owed, I realize that things could be a lot worse. I’m out some money but it’s not an astronomical amount where my livelihood has become affected. One girl tweeted that she is missing over 15K!!! I can’t even imagine. I feel for the bloggers who do this for a living and depend highly on the income they receive from advertisers and campaigns that they participate in. It might not seem like a lot of work but creating content, taking photos, writing multiple drafts, editing, re-checking guidelines over and over, sending multiple campaign-related emails, etc. takes time. A lot of time. I’ve been following the story via articles and Facebook pages and it seem like there is nothing we can do. Maybe talking to a lawyer would be the next step for a lot of people but I don’t think it would be worth it for me. Lawyer fees would probably end up costing me more than I would get back.
My ads have been removed and I’m in the process of looking for another network to join. If anyone has had good experiences with another company, I’d love recommendations in the comments below (or you can email me at email@example.com).
Thank you guys and hope you have a great day! Since I’m leaving tomorrow, I most likely won’t have any blog updates until I get back but you can follow along on Instagram (@the_athletarian) if you’d like!
See you soon!
