I’ve been CHOPPED! {and a winner}

I have been wanting to chop my hair off for a while now.  During the holidays I asked my hairdresser to cut it short and he refused.  What hairdressers refuse a good chopping?!?!  I always thought they loved going scissor happy on people!  He told me my hair looked way too good long and was afraid I would be mad at him if I was unhappy with the result.  So I got a trim.

Last night I got the crazy idea to tag along with my cousin and go to her hairdresser’s place.  He got excited when I told him what I wanted and went bananas on me.

It is so short, but I love the change.

Onto more important things…like food.

I posted this on Facebook yesterday because they are some of the most phenomenal pancakes I have ever made.

Jamie Eason, you never let me down.  I used her recipe for pumpkin spice pancakes which you can find here.  I layered them with Greek yogurt mixed with stevia for a little extra protein.  I’ve already eaten them three times since yesterday.  I get a little obsessed with food.  When I really like something I will eat it every day until I find something else to take it’s place.

Finally, a winner has been chosen for my NeoCell Collagen Sport giveaway!

Congrats Karyn C (KCsweetTweets)!  Send your address and choice of flavour (chocolate or vanilla) to theathletarian [at] gmail [dot] com!

What did you eat for breakfast today?  I need ideas for when I run out of my pancakes :)

eats & treats

Thank you for all of your comments on yesterday’s post!!  I love all of the motivation and positivity I am getting from all of you regarding my new training plan!  I think it’s going to be great.  I have seen a lot of “results” pictures on Jamie Eason’s Facebook page and they are incredible.  I can’t wait to see what happens.  I may even post some photos of my progress…or maybe just make you wait until the end to see my before and after shots!  😉

For those of you curious about the diet, you can read about it here.  A day basically consists of 5-6 meals that are high in protein and non-starchy vegetables and low in carbohydrates.  One of my typical days will look something like this (for Phase 1):

  • Breakfast: oats with protein powder

  • Snack: homemade protein bar/pancake, Greek yogurt with fruit, or a protein shake

today's snack: protein pancake + Greek yogurt + pomegranate

  • Lunch: a protein (tofu/tempeh/fish) with a starch (brown rice/sweet potato/quinoa) and veggies
  • Snack: same as above
  • Dinner: same concept as lunch

grilled cod + steamed veggies + 1/2 sweet potato

It really isn’t much of a diet, but more like clean eating.  Veggies are unlimited throughout the day, starches aren’t consumed after 7:00pm and fruit is limited to twice a day.  I’ve done something similar in the past after reading Tosca Reno’s book, The Eat Clean Diet.  I remember feeling great so I don’t think this will be hard to follow at all!  I am going to try my best not to cheat, but I do love my stuffing and it might be making an appearance on Christmas!  I don’t think eating extra starches for one day will kill the plan though so I’m not going to stress about it!!

mmm stuffing!!!

This is going to be a great way for Dean and I to “clean out” or bodies.  We have had one too many pizza dates and have been starting to feel run down and gross despite our efforts in the gym.  I think diet plays a huge role in how we feel and I am feeling the positive effects already!
There is an awesome giveaway going on that I forgot to mention yesterday!  Hayley from Oat Couture is giving away clothing and accessories from MyDragonFly (I took a look at the stuff and it’s awesome!) as well as tickets to an event in London for NYE.  Check out her blog for more details and get your entries in!

How many meals do you eat in a day?

What’s your favourite vegetable??  Would you choose it over stuffing?

I like a lot of veggies…but stuffing always wins.  I would dive head first into a pool of bready goodness!

1 day down, 83 to go.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!  I have a lot of catching up to do, as I took two days off to spend with Dean and to organize some new goals.  One of these goals is fitness-related (obviously) and Dean is 100% on board with me!  We decided it’s time to challenge ourselves in a different way, so we’re taking on Jamie Eason’s LiveFit Trainer!

It’s a 12-week program which incorporates a lot of strength training, cardio and super clean eating.  The whole first phase/month of this program involves no cardio at all.  At first this kinda freaked me out because I am a cardio junkie.  Instead, the focus of this phase is on building fat-burning muscle and eating right to fuel your body, all in the hopes of looking like Jamie by the end (a girl can dream, right?).

Hanging with all of the tough guys in the weight room doesn’t scare me anymore and I could use a little time off from cardio.  With my injured feet, I should probably be laying off them and giving them a chance to heal.  Before I know it, the first phase will be over and it will be time for some sweat-inducing HIIT training in phase two!

My eating habits are taking a huge turn as well.  I know I have been focusing on getting more protein but it’s now at a whole different level.  I took a shopping trip to Costco, with and courtesy of mom :D, and came home with some pretty sweet goods!  Veggies, fruit, flax, frozen cod, egg whites, Greek yogurt, and hemp hearts.

I used a lot of these items yesterday and my meals were delicious.  The day went really well as Dean and I worked out (it was chest and triceps day) and prepped all of our food for the week.  I can’t wait to see how this progresses!  I will talk more about the food in another post 😛

Please note that Dean and I are not doing this to lose weight.  We wanted to challenge ourselves and push our bodies in a way we have never done before.  We will (hopefully) build strength and what happens to our bodies will be a surprise!

What is your favourite body part to train??

It was always legs for me but I am really loving shoulders these days!

Tell me your ultimate go-to high-protein snack or meal!

Protein oats for me!  Quick and delicious 😉

Last one, I promise.

So here is Part 3 of my Q and A posting marathon.  If you missed Part 1 on the random things about my life, you can find it here.  If you missed Part 2 on what I eat, click here and be excited.  Today I will answer all of the questions that I got about running, races, and sports.  Gotta save the best for last, right?
Let’s do this.
What are your dream races you want to run someday or wish you could run?
I really want to run Disney someday.  Who wouldn’t want a Disney character hanging around their neck?!
Do you notice any difference between races in Canada than the races you read about in the States?
It seems as though Americans are more serious about the sport.  There are races all the time and the events look a lot bigger than the ones here.  In Toronto, unless you are running a half or full marathon, the races are really small.  People also complain here ALL THE TIME about road closures.  It kind of makes you feel guilty for disrupting the city!
What is your favourite distance as a runner?
Right now my favourite distance is probably a half marathon.  I would like it to be a marathon but the first one I ran last year had a lot of bumps along the way in terms of training.  I’m definitely going to train for another one again soon and see if my preference changes!
PS I thought this picture was funny because once upon a time bud earphones never stayed in my ears so I had to wear these silly things.  Thank you Skull Candy for making me look semi-cool when I run now.
Do you have any races coming up?
The only race I have officially signed up for is the Chicago Urbanathlon on October 15th.  I have the rest of my summer to take it easy and focus more on strength training.  The race is only 9.75 miles but there are 7 obstacles along the way (i.e. cars to jump over, hurdles, walls to climb, stadium stairs, etc.).  A lot of the obstacles require upper body strength so I’m going to spend the next couple of months focusing on being able to do more than 10 push-ups :)
Here is a picture of the finish.  Jump over taxis…climb a net to reach the top of a bus…climb a net back down…crab crawl under a chain link fence…and then somehow get yourself over the final wall.  This should be interesting.
What is your favorite pre-race meal?
Pre-race, I generally stick to my regular breakfast of oats and fruit or cereal.  It is what I eat on a regular basis before my runs so I try to keep it consistent.
How about post-race meal?  Re-fuel or indulgence?

The last couple of races I have been eating a giant serving of fro-yo from Menchies.  After my first marathon all I wanted was chips so I ate a whole bag to myself.  I guess it depends on the day but I definitely don’t hold back!

When did you know you were a runner?
I would say I developed a passion while attending University but considered myself a true runner while training for my first half marathon in 2008.
If you could go on a run or take on a workout with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
I am secretly in love with fitness model Jamie Eason.  She is so so so beautiful and is the perfect example of strong, feminine, and athletic.  I would DIE to workout with her.  I used to have a fear of muscle and just wanted to be super skinny for the rest of my life.  Looking at a body like Jamie’s makes me realize that muscle is HOT and it’s ok to look strong and powerful as a woman.  Plus, having more muscle burns more calories which = more frozen yogurt and chips.  KIDDING Jamie if you ever read this.  I will try and eat clean forever so I can look like you :)
Do you run with or without underwear?
All of my shorts have built in underwear so I usually don’t have to wear any.  If I do, it get really uncomfortable!
Do you do anything different on runs while on your period?
Nope!  I don’t really get affected by it so my running stays the same :)
Did you play sports in high school?
I played absolutely no sports in high school.  I hated sweating, running, balls, bats, you name it.  It wasn’t for me.  Don’t even ask what happened because I have no idea.  I turned into a running beast during University.

And now I am a tennis pro.  Watch out, Serena Williams.
What is your favorite sports moment?
In terms of me and sports, I have no moments because I don’t really play sports!  I guess my first race stands out in my mind.  It was a 10K that I ran in University.  I felt like I trained so hard for it and I was so proud of myself.  I could barely run for more that 5 minutes at the start of my training so crossing that finish line was so so sweet.
Now that this series is over I can share a FUNNY story with you all tomorrow.
Brace yourselves.
What is your dream race?  Maybe we can run one together!!

What is your favourite distance to run?  I’m curious!
