Just wrapped up week 6 of Golden Ultra training and it actually felt a lot better than expected. I was pretty excited for my long run which doesn’t happen often. I think it was a combination of the weather being awesome and the fact that I downloaded some episodes of No Meat Athlete Radio to listen to while running. It made the time go by really fast and I learned a lot!! This is going to be a regular thing. Thanks to everyone who recommended podcasts to me. Hopefully I’ll get around to listening to all the ones you guys suggested!
My long run pace and distance got really messed up so I don’t have exact numbers. Sometimes when I run downtown the satellites go a bit nuts in certain spots and it was telling me that I was running my miles in the 4:00-5:00 range (impossible) when my average before hitting those streets was in the 9:00-9:30 range. It showed I had reached 16 miles in 2 hours and 10 minutes (also impossible) so I just kept running until I reached 2 hours and 30 minutes. I figured that’s about how long 16 miles at a comfortable pace should take me. Who knows!
Tuesday: 7.15 miles @ 9:18 min/mile
Wednesday: 5 treadmill miles @ 9:19 min/mile
Thursday: 8.6 miles @ 8:45 min/mile + HereToCreate workout with adidas
Saturday: 16ish miles @ who knows what pace
Sunday: 3.25 miles @ 9:23 min/mile
TOTAL: 40 miles
Another thing I tried during my long run was EATING MORE. I’ve been super hungry on my long runs so I figured I would switch things up this week and it worked in my favour. I woke up extra early (to give myself time to digest) and made myself a bowl of oats with half a banana, peanut butter and maple syrup (around 350 calories) and ate three gels during my run (300 calories).
I used to fear running with a lot in my stomach because I thought it would give me cramps, so I used to eat a really light breakfast (150-200 calories) and for a 16-miler I’d probably have one or two gels (100-200 calories). Turns out it’s the other way around and I (personally) need more fuel to feel good on a long run. I also had no crazy stomach pains post-run which is something I used to struggle with all. the. time. Of course, different things work for different people. I know others who run completely fasted/don’t fuel at all and are 100% fine. I am not one of those people! Also, salted chocolate GUs are my new favourite. They are so tasty!
Yesterday was a holiday here and also my rest day so I spent the day at the Toronto Islands with my cousins. It was a long day full of lineups and getting sunburnt…but we had tons of fun canoeing and taking photos like a bunch of tourists. We ended our day at Sweet Jesus, waiting in yet another line. It took us an hour to get ice cream! AN HOUR! I’ve only been one other time and there was no wait because it was cold out but I guess everyone had the same idea yesterday. Whatever. It was good but I will never do that again.
Hope you all had a great (long) weekend!
