I know I talked a little bit about my first #HereToCreate class with adidas Canada a few weeks ago but I thought I’d break things down a little bit so that you know what to expect if you plan on popping in for a free class this summer.
First off, the classes take place at Totum Life Science, a small boutique gym on King Street West. There are two floors – the bottom floor is where the front desk and change rooms are, the top floor is where you will find all of the machines and equipment. Half of the top floor is reserved for our classes and upon arrival, everything needed for that night’s workout (weights, towels, water bottles, etc) is set up for each of us.
The #HereToCreate class starts at 7pm. Julian Ho is our trainer every week and it definitely is a love/hate relationship with that man… 😉 He starts off with an introduction to the type of workout he has planned for us (it’s different every week), why it’s beneficial, and what kind of movements it includes. He ends every introduction with a quote (which I love) for us to think about. Last night’s was “What we become, what we are, ultimately consists of what we have been doing, what we eat, what we drink, and how we have been moving.” – Ghandi
We start off with a warm-up which includes whole lot of jumping and wondering what the heck Julian’s actual workout will feel like if the warm-up is already leaving you out of breath. We then go through the first round of exercises slowly so that we can learn the sequence and different movements. The following rounds are a lot quicker and often Julian will modify certain exercises to make them a bit more challenging as the workout progresses.
Last night’s workout was called PRIMAL. From the #HereToCreate website:
It was probably my favourite one to date. I like that it included a little bit of everything, especially the yoga as I definitely don’t do enough of it! I won’t lie, I was a little weary when I saw the word “animalistic”. I had no idea what that meant but I loved that portion of the workout. We had designated “lanes” and Julian had us do different kinds of walks/crawls/hops that just BURNED SO GOOD.
We did six rounds total and it looked a little something like this:
R1: Qi Gong + yoga
R2: 6 PMP* (single set)
R3: Animal Drills -> beast crawl, duck walk, crab crawl, frog jump, lateral ape, lizard
R4: 6 PMP (superset)
R5: Animal Drills -> beast crawl, duck walk, crab crawl, frog jump, lateral ape, lizard
R6: 6 PMP (giant sets)
*PMP = Primal Movement Patterning
We end off with a stretch/cool down. Last night we got to use foam rollers and a lacrosse ball to roll out our legs/glutes, back and shoulders. It was amazing but I think it hurt more than the workout itself! We were also lucky enough to receive some swag – an adidas duffel and towel. The bag is a perfect size! usually duffel bags look more like a body bag but this one is just right. Fits everything without being too big.
So there you have it! I’ve been loving these workouts more and more every week. They kick my butt (in the best possible way) and I just find it so motivating to be around such strong women. The atmosphere and energy that Julian creates make me want to work harder and push myself in new ways. I’ve learned so many different exercises over the last few weeks and I’m looking forward to seeing what Julian has in store for us in the upcoming weeks!
A reminder (because some people have asked) – you sign up for these classes (HereToCreate.ca) on Thursday mornings starting at 9am for the FOLLOWING Thursday. So you are signing up a week in advance. The spots fill up pretty quickly from what I’ve heard so if you are planning on coming out, I’d probably try as soon as registration opens.
Hope you all have a great weekend!
