SeaWheeze is in 17 days. 17 FREAKING DAYS and I still have a busted up ankle/calf/hamstring/butt cheek. Not awesome. But guess what?! Remember how I said I could only get an appointment with a sports doctor on the 31st? Well my BFF recommended another awesome doc that can see me this Thursday so I am pumped to say the least. Time to get to the bottom of this.
I will be doing a few posts leading up to SeaWheeze to talk about fuel, cross training (which I’m really good at these days), injuries (heyoooo have one now), and other fun stuff like race outfits (yes, a lot of thought goes into it). When I posted about my Vega cooking class experience last week I had quite a few people on Instagram and the blog post ask about recipes for the things I got to eat. I thought today would be a perfect day to share one of my favourites – the chocolate cherry smoothie.
So many people think can’t get enough protein or you can’t get full off a plant-based diet but you SO can. There are ways to sneak in some really awesome nutritional ingredients that have staying power and keep you going strong. Sticking to plant-based meals around workouts gives me a lot of energy and make for great recovery too.
- 2 cups non-dairy milk
- 1 cup frozen cherries
- 3 tbsp raw cacao powder
- 1 tbsp raw cacao nibs
- 1 pinch ground cinnamon
- 1 scoop Vega Smoothie in Natural
- ½ tsp vanilla bean powder
- ½ tsp yacon syrup
- Add all ingredients to blender and combine thoroughly.
I have a lazy (and cheaper) version of this smoothie where I just blend almond milk, frozen cherries and Vega Performance Protein in chocolate. It tastes similar but the recipe above is much more decadent and dessert-like! I know sometimes it is hard to find ingredients like raw cacao powder, cacao nibs and vanilla bean powder so you don’t necessarily need these things. They add some nutritional boost and a bit of deliciousness but you could always sub chocolate protein (instead of natural) and pure vanilla extract to get a similar flavour. RIGHT? Right. I always try not to get overwhelmed by ingredients I can’t find. I just make do with what I have and 9/10 times it comes out just as delicious.
I hope you try it! It’s great for breakfast, post-workout, or even for dessert! 😉
Do you have a favourite fruit you add to your smoothies?
