My idea of necessities

by Christina @ The Athletarian on February 21, 2013

Holyyyyyyy heckkkkkkkkk.  Today was leg day.  That is all.  I haven’t had a day dedicated solely to legs in a long time and I asked myself if James Wilson was secretly trying to kill me during this morning’s workout.  Everything was burning and I wanted to die.  I didn’t even get to the ab portion of the workout because I ran out of time but I can just make up for that tonight, maybe by doing another FitnessGlo ab routine.

legday

My butt and legs are the hardest parts of my body for me to develop.  I have always had super skinny arms and a tiny back so having muscle show in those spots is a bit easier.  My lower half is a different story though…  I am really learning a lot about how my body responds to different exercises on this program.  It’s the food part I’m still trying to nail (aka trying not to eat chocolate every day)…but it’s all trial and error.  Different things work for different bodies and it just takes time to figure it out!

The following is most likely not James Wilson-approved but as I went to do a small grocery run last night and…well, I couldn’t help myself.

PB Cheerios

Completely necessary in everyone’s cupboards.  I haven’t tried them yet and I am completely terrified they will turn me into a Cheerios addict.  Mind you, there are worse things.  But still.  I also don’t like the “limited time only” on the box.  It creates anxiety, don’t you think??  So if I like them, does it mean I have to go buy 30 more boxes in case I never see them again?  Very rude marketing if you ask me.

necessities

My intention was just to grab a big box of spinach (also a necessity) because I ran out and I feel like I can’t make my smoothies without it.  They just aren’t the same.  Zevia was also on sale (6 for $3) and though I’m not huge on pop (or any carbonated drinks), sometimes I have a craving for root beer or coke.  No, Zevia is not as good as the real thing but it has 0 calories and is sweetened with stevia so no sugar shakes (like I had on the weekend).  I also threw some rice cakes in there for good measure.  Who doesn’t love a good slice of cardboard?  Hah.  No I actually really enjoy rice cakes, believe it or not.  You just have to get creative and top them with really flavourful things.

So basically I’m good for the rest of the week because I am stocked with Cheerios, spinach, and rice cakes.

What are some of the items you always have in the house? – I need to have bananas, oats, Ezekiel bread, peanut butter, and almond milk.  I don’t think I can live without any of those things.

Favourite cereal?? – I can go on forever with this one but I’ll narrow it down to Raisin Bran, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and most recently PEANUT BUTTER TOAST CRUNCH.

LOL I was surprised to see your Cheerios. Looks like a darn yummy indulgence!

Items I always have to have in the house – eggs, almond butter, Ezekiel, apples, coconut oil and So Delicious Unsweetened coconut milk. I’ve tried almond milk many times, I even have some now, but after making my shake with it I’m realizing I’m not as big of a fan, although I so wish I was. The coco milk I buy is only 45cals a cup though so that’s a bonus and it makes my shakes taste great. The great part is that it’s mild enough to even eat your cereal with and not have an overpowering coconut flavour.

I, too, like Zevias once in a while! My son bought some on the weekend for himself so I’d much rather he have those than his favourite Coke Zeroes. I bought some brown rice cakes flavoured with cinnamon and I rather like that cinnamon flavoured cardboard too. LOL!

Have a great night!!!! <3

Haha yes! I haven’t tried them yet but I am excited!

That’s funny about the almond milk – I find it has LESS flavour than coconut milk (though I love both!). I buy almond milk more because it comes in a case at Costco but once in a while I’ll treat myself to some coconut milk too!

Hope you have a great day, Tasha!

I agree with everything you said about leg day. I’m also doing the James Wilson program and was so excited to get to the ab portion because my legs. were. dead. He’s a crazy man!
I’m also struggling a bit with the meals for the program because of running, I am so hungry always. I need to grab myself a box of those Cheerios :)
I also need to have Almond milk & oats. Definitely almond butter and apples too.

I know!! He is trying to kill us, I swear! I am so sore today andI didn’t even lift that heavy!

I am always hungry too. I decided that the second half of the program (starting next week) I’m going to buckle down on the nutrition portion. I have been waaaaayyyyy too lenient, eating a surplus to gain muscle…but the surplus hasn’t always been “clean”. Whoops!

You just wait until tomorrow…I did W6D3 yesterday and I can barely sit to pee and it hurts to laugh today! I’m getting nervous for week 7 because according to the Facebook group the leg days get even more brutal!!
My absolute must haves in the kitchen are bananas, almond milk, frozen spinach, sweet potatoes and tilapia! I guess it’s good that they are all healthy but I cannot get through a day without them!
And i’m totally jealous of your Beats!! I want a pair to work out in!

Oh gosh….Emily, my calves are on FIRE! Everything hurts! I am scared for next week too. Everyone says it’s killer.

Get a pair of Beats! We can be twins!

What kind of shoes are you wearing? Love the pants I have been in search of those one’s. Also love your purse another wish list item. I have all the same staples in my house as you do. Favorite cereal kashi heart to heart.

I have the same “problem” with going into the store for one item and coming out with 3 bags worth of stuff… but it’s like as soon as I walk into the store, I suddenly remember that “Oh yeah, I DO need chocolate, gummy bears, and another 4 boxes of cereal.” And speaking of cereal, it’s hard to choose just one, but Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Frosted Mini Wheats are definitely up there.

As for staples… if I don’t have Greek yogurt, almond butter, bananas, cereal, and cinnamon in the house, I panic. As long as I have those things, then I’m perfectly content with eating breakfast all day :)

Shoot. I forgot to get chocolate and gummy bears! Two of my favourite things haha. So funny…a friend sent me a package yesterday and there were gummy bears in it. They were the first thing I ate :)

Ummmm frosted mini wheats!!!! I love those too!

We always have tomatoes. We can never not have tomatoes, especially cherry tomatoes. If we don’t leave the grocery store with kale, spinach, bananas, apples, pears and avocado, we don’t survive the week.
Weird fact- I don’t eat cereal. I don’t like it. It’s rare that I’ll ever have a bowl. Paul cannot live without his Mini Wheats though. We have Costco boxes we have to buy every week because of how much he loves it.

I know, I don’t know when this happened. I would literally have cereal for dinner when I was a kid!

My list is very similar to yours! Minus the oats and adding lemons. I can’t live without fresh lemon water!

We always have to have oats, pb or almond butter, spinach and MUSHROOMS. YUM!

My favorite cereal would have to be Nature Valley Maple Crunch!

Ahhhh I wish I liked mushrooms!! There are so many recipes that call for them but for some reason I just can’t handle the taste and texture!!

I love Zevia! I used to be addicted to diet coke and would go through about 2 cans a day, but I have switched to Zevia and it is awesome. I kind of like the taste better! Every shopping trip I stock up on: sprouted tofu, kale, spinach, frozen broccoli, eggs, almond milk, carrots, some sort of extra protein like fish and then something that is on sale. I used to love kashi and any type of cereal but have eliminated wheat from my diet so no more cereals :O[

Which one is your favourite?? I really like the ginger root beer but they’re all pretty good. I looooove kale too! I can’t get enough of kale chips!

I really like the cream soda as well as the cherry lime. The root beer is perfect for root beer floats though :O)
I could a whole bag of cheesy kale chips and still want more

I love rice cakes too! I’ve been fortunate enough to find inexpensive brown rice cakes that are delicioso! I always have those, almond butter, oats, spinach, and almond milk in the house. And, I usually have a ton of apples! (An apple a day…)

Can you post a link to your James Wilson workouts?

My lower half is also the slowest to respond. I’m currently in the middle of week 5 of the James Wilson program and am looking forward to week 6 next week(I’m a little behind due to a week long vacay). Staples in my household: Oats, Cottage Cheese, Almond Milk, & Almonds. My favorite cereal is definitely lucky charms but it is rarely in my house due to the fact that I love it so much. :)

Also – I received my first tub of Vega Sport Protein and the pre-workout energizer today!! I’m excited to try it out. I honestly would have never known about Vega if it hadn’t been for finding your blog. Thanks for sharing! Have a super weekend!

Kirsten
P.S. I’ll keep you posted on what I think about my Vega products!

It’s been forever since I’ve commented on one of your blog posts but I just have to say that I stopped dead in my tracks while I was at Wal Mart tonight picking up shaving cream and there was a huge display of peanut butter toast crunch. I refrained from buying it because I currently have 4 boxes of Life cereal, one box of honey bunch cheerio medley and one box of golden grahams. I really love cereal. I recently went through a box of strawberry yogurt burst cheerios that were just eh, okay. Before that I devoured a box of berry Kix. I love love love cereal if that isn’t clear :)
